Off-road adventure, public land access, and camping just minutes from Redding, CA.
The Chappie-Shasta Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Area spans over 250 miles of trails and roads through the rolling, brush-covered hills above the Sacramento River, near Shasta Lake and the towering Shasta Dam. Open year-round and welcoming riders of all skill levels, this expansive recreation area offers everything from casual trail rides to advanced rock crawling routes for motorcycles, ATVs, side-by-sides, and 4x4s.
Scenic overlooks throughout the area offer breathtaking views of the Sacramento River Gorge and surrounding mountains. Wildlife is abundant, with chances to spot osprey, bald eagles, mule deer, and the occasional black bear.
The area is named in honor of former U.S. Congressman Eugene Chappie, a strong supporter of public lands access, and is partially funded through the California State Parks OHV Program, managed by the Bureau of Land Management, and supported by volunteer groups such as the
Redding Dirt Riders, The Friends of Chappie and the local Black Sheep 4x4 Club.
